The Master of Arts (Development Studies) is being offered from the TISS Hyderabad campus from the academic year 2014-15. This programme is anchored by the School of Livelihoods and Development Studies.
Master of Arts (Development Studies) as a subject of study seeks to analyse the dynamics of development, understood broadly as the socio-cultural, economic, political and technological aspects underlying societal change. To do so, it employs the interdisciplinary approach: draws upon the theories and analytical tools from various social science disciplines and tries to integrate them to arrive at a broader picture. Additionally, given its primary engagement with the analysis of the process of development and its varying impacts, its orientation is twofold: informing towards better policy-making and inculcating a concern and commitment about social justice and sustainable development.
The Master of Arts (Development Studies) programme offered by TISS, Hyderabad campus aims to impart students a broad-based understanding of the perspectives, practices and processes of development and their varying implications on the society and environment. To do so, it strives to integrate insights drawn from different disciplines so as to both respect competing viewpoints and to form an informed perspective. Specifically, it aims to guide the students towards a grounded and broad-based learning, develop competency in skills of data analysis and assessment and provide opportunities to use them to assess development practice through experiential learning and research. It is hoped that this course would attract outstanding students from varying educational and social backgrounds who commonly share a concern for development and nourish their potentials so as to enable them to make critical contribution in the field of their choice.
Spread over two years (for four semesters), the students are offered a wide range of courses, both basic and elective, and a research project experience. This programme attempts:
To equip students in developing critical perspectives in examining developmental experiences and their consequences for the society, especially on vulnerable, disadvantaged and the marginalised sections, and the natural environment.
To introduce the students to models of development; creates an understanding of participatory, self-sustaining and people-centred public policies and development; and
develops their expertise in methodologies and skills for development research, and programme planning and management.
Students who graduate with this degree can find their professional career in academic institutions pursuing inter-disciplinary research and teaching in development studies; in civil and allied administrative services; development facilitating organisations; the corporate sector; and in research consultancy firms.
